NComputing takes aim at the enterprise

Zero-client vendor NComputing is on the hunt for Microsoft, VMware and Citrix partners to support its push into the enterprise market.

The US-based vendor specialises in access devices that act as a replacement for traditional terminals in virtual desktop environments.

Earlier this week, the firm launched two new products, Classroom-in-a-Box and Office-in-a-Box, which aim to provide partners with the elements needed to deploy virtual desktops for education and SMB users.

NComputing’s new chief executive, former Citrix boss Raj Dhingra, said the firm now has a good grip on the SMB and education markets, and is turning its attentions upstream.

“We have sold about 2.6 million seats worldwide and 60 per cent of those have been in the education market,” he told ChannelWeb. “We have also been successful in the SMB space because it is an area most other [virtualisation] vendors have overlooked in favour of the mid-market and enterprise.”

Mobile World Congress: F-Secure introduces Android and Symbian protection

February 23, 2011

F-Secure has released version 7 of its Protection Service for Mobile (PSM 7) which extends the smartphone security software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform to support Google Android and Symbian handsets.

Launching the major update to PSM at the Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona, today, F-Secure says the service is now available to all cellular operators and mobile internet service providers.

In use, F-Secure says that PSM 7 allows operators to offer a comprehensive security and parental control as a service for all their customers’ mobile devices, including smartphones and tablet computers.

According to the IT security vendor, as more and more children, teenagers and adults are surfing the internet with multiple devices, mobile security becomes an issue for everyone.

In use, PSM 7 is billed as securing internet browsing, social networking and mobile financial transactions, as well as keeping children safe from inappropriate and dangerous web content.

One of the most interesting features of the updated SaaS platform is its ability to perform remote tracking and wipes on a smartphone that has been lost or stolen.

Announcing PSM 7, Samu Konttinen, F-Secure’s executive vice president for sales and marketing, said that the increasingly popular Android tablet computers and smartphones often contain confidential information such as photos and business documents which need to be protected from falling in the wrong hands.

“At the same time there is a clear need for parental control on the many mobile devices now used by children, as one in ten web pages are not suitable for them”, he said.

“Thanks to the new generation of F-Secure’s mobile security solution, our operator partners’ customers can enjoy all their mobile devices to the full”, he added.

UK net is ‘not ready’ for future

The UK is slowly climbing up the broadband world rankings, but is still not “ready for tomorrow,” according to a global study of net services.

The annual report, commissioned by network giant Cisco, looks at how well countries are doing in terms of both quality and penetration of net services.

The UK is now ranked 18th out of 72 countries, up from 25th place last year.

South Korea is once again ranked first.

The annual study, conducted by the University of Oxford’s Said Business School and the University of Oviedo in Spain looks at a range of factors, including both the number of homes to have broadband and the quality of the services.

Quality, for the purposes of the study, encompasses the speed of the connection and the latency – the amount of time it takes data to arrive at a machine.

It put 14 countries in the elite category of being ready for the “applications of tomorrow”, including the obvious; Korea, Japan and Sweden and the less obvious; Latvia, Bulgaria and Portugal.

In 2008, when the first study was commissioned, only one country – Japan – was judged ready for tomorrow.

TOP TEN BROADBAND REGIONS

  • South Korea
  • Hong Kong
  • Japan
  • Iceland
  • Switzerland
  • Luxembourg
  • Singapore
  • Malta
  • Netherlands
  • United Arab Emirates
  • Qatar
  • Sweden
  • Denmark

The applications ascribed to tomorrow’s internet include high definition internet TV and high-quality video communications.

The report found that such applications would require an average download speed of 11Mbps and an upload speed of 5Mbps.

The average global upload speed currently is just 1.7Mbps.

In this year’s report the UK is categorised as “comfortably enjoying today’s applications”, alongside 19 others including the USA, France, Canada, Greece and Poland.

A further 19 countries – including Vietnam, Egypt, China and India, are characterised as being “below today’s application threshold” while five countries – Algeria, Peru, Nigeria, Kenya and Angola – are viewed as having only the most basic of services.

The report finds that average broadband speeds in the UK now stand at 6.4Mbps (megabits per second), which is more than double that in 2008, when the first report was compiled.

It is also above the global average of 5.9Mbps.

“The UK is not on average ready for tomorrow but there has been significant improvements in the last two years,” said Fernando Gil de Bernabe, a senior director at Cisco.

Mr de Bernabe said the UK was likely to experience a “step-change” in its broadband footprint over the next 12 months, because of increased fibre optic roll-outs from BT and extensions of Virgin Media’s cable network.

“Where similar fibre roll-outs have happened the download speeds improved by 50 or 60% in just one year,” he said.

Those countries which are categorised as ready for tomorrow in the report have one thing in common, according to Mr de Bernabe.

“There is a clear digital strategy. These countries have placed a bet on broadband and think it will have the same impact on their economies as the infrastructures of the past. They want a society that is based on knowledge,” he said.

The UK government has ambitions to be the best broadband economy in Europe by 2015, although it has so far only committed to the rollout of basic 2Mbps broadband by that date.

That decision could mean the UK falls foul of European legislation. The European Union wants member states to provide citizens with a minimum of 30Mbps broadband by 2020, with all nations offering basic broadband – generally regarded as 2Mbps – for all by 2013.

Mr de Bernabe said the UK needed to put its pledge into practice.

“What I hear repeatedly is the question about who is going to pay for it. The leadership countries aren’t asking those questions,” he said.

CRN: NComputing hunts VARs for VDI push

September 14, 2010

Zero client specialist NComputing is pursuing partners to add weight to its UK expansion plans.

The US-based vendor offers access devices that act as a replacement for traditional terminals in a virtual desktop environment.

Its products link direct, or via an Ethernet connection, to a virtual desktop-hosting server. They also feature USB ports to support a keyboard and mouse.

The vendor has primarily targeted the technology at the education sector, since arriving in the UK, and now plans to expand into the SME and enterprise market.

Paul Gullett, EMEA vice president at NComputing, explained: “We have done very well up to this point by focusing on particular markets, but we recognise that if we want to continue that growth we have to move into others.”

The company has launched a reseller recruitment drive in support of its expansion plans and is looking for VARs with a knowledge of server operating systems and networking.

“An understanding of other areas of virtualisation would also be a plus,” said Gullett.
The standalone nature of the devices should ensure partners find it easy to make margin on them during virtual desktop deployments, he added.

“Fundamentally, for every dollar we sell of NComputing, partners should be able to sell 10 dollars off the back of it in servers and other support.”

Bob Tarzey, service director at analyst Quocirca, said: “The virtual desktop market is growing, which leads to zero client sales, but Ncomputing will find itself up against a lot of competition.”

New boss for RES Software

Workspace management software vendor RES Software has appointed Klaus Besier as its new chief executive.

In the role, Besier will be responsible for overseeing the vendor’s global expansion plans. His predecessor, Hans Middelburg, left the company in January to head up IT consultancy Madcap.

Besier has chaired the vendor’s board of directors since October 2009 and said he was “pleased” to be formalising his connection with the firm.

“With more than 2,500 global customers, and more than 1 million licences sold worldwide, RES has built an impressive track record and foundation for growth,” Besier said. “There is a tremendous opportunity and demand for the firm’s solutions and the company expects to see significant expansion across all global markets.”

RES pursues partners for PowerFuse push

March 2, 2010
Posted by: appspeed @ 3:27 pm

RES Software has launched a reseller recruitment campaign to support the rollout of the latest version of its workspace management tool, PowerFuse 2010.

The product, explained the vendor, has been designed to make it easier for organisations to deploy new desktop platforms, such as Windows 7 and virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) solutions.

Ronnie Khan, UK country manager at RES Software, said the firm wants to sign up 20-30 more resellers over the course of this year to build on the sales momentum created by the product’s previous version.

He added: “RES currently has that number [of resellers] in the UK, but some are just Authorised level so we want to have 20-30 focussed partners that we can truly work in partnership with.”

Khan said the firm would be relying on its distribution partners, which include CDG UK and AppSpeed, to achieve its reseller recruitment target.
